Chapter 11
Thorne's Subtle Threat
Director Thorne confronts Anya about her questions. His tone is outwardly concerned, but his veiled warnings carry a chilling undertone of power and menace.
Anya Petrova smoothed the fabric of her simple grey dress, the scent of old paper and polished wood filling her nostrils as she stepped into Director Thorne’s office. He gestured for her to sit, his voice a low, soothing rumble.
“Anya, my dear,” he began, his tone laced with an almost paternal concern. “I’ve been meaning to have a word. I’ve noticed you’ve been… rather inquisitive lately. Anya met his gaze, her own steady. She had expected this. Ben had warned her that Thorne might catch wind of her quiet inquiries, though she hadn't anticipated it would be so swift. “Director Thorne,” she replied, her voice clear and even, “I’m simply trying to understand how the resources allocated for our town’s recovery are being utilized. The people are still struggling, and the reports I’ve seen don’t quite align with the reality on the ground.”
