The air in my study, usually a sanctuary of worn leather and quiet contemplation, had grown heavy, thick with an unspoken unease. It was the kind of stillness that precedes a storm, a prickling sensation on the back of my neck that whispered of unseen eyes. I’d felt it for days now, a subtle shift in the familiar rhythm of my solitude. My research into the cryptic manuscript, once a fervent, solitary pursuit, now felt… observed.
I’d dismissed it at first, a manifestation of my own heightened anxieties. The sheer audacity of the manuscript’s claims, the way it systematically dismantled centuries of theological dogma, was enough to make anyone feel a little paranoid. But the feeling persisted, a persistent shadow clinging to the edges of my vision. It was in the way the streetlights outside my window seemed to linger a moment too long on my facade, the way the rustle of leaves outside my usually frequented paths now sounded like hushed conversations.
I found myself instinctively pulling the heavy velvet curtains tighter each evening, as if the fabric could somehow shield me from an invisible gaze. My beloved collection of theological texts, once a comforting presence, now seemed to hold their breath, their ancient wisdom suddenly feeling fragile. I was no longer just a disillusioned theologian seeking answers; I was a man who had stumbled into something far larger, and far more dangerous, than I had initially comprehended.
