Chapter 3

First Taste of Fortune

Hesitantly, Jonas makes his first withdrawal. The money appears almost instantly, a surreal experience that washes away his worries. He begins to rely on this digital windfall.

The little screen in Jonas’s palm pulsed with a soft, inviting glow. It was a beacon in the dim, cramped room he called home, a stark contrast to the grey drizzle outside and the gnawing emptiness in his stomach. Hesitation, a familiar companion these past few weeks, warred with a desperate hope. He’d read the app’s promises a hundred times, each word a whispered temptation: Instant Cash. No Questions Asked. Your Dreams, Delivered. Could it really be that simple?

His fingers trembled as he navigated the sleek, unfamiliar interface. The numbers swam before his eyes, a dizzying array of zeros and decimal points. He’d chosen the smallest amount, a mere fifty dollars, as a test. It felt like a gamble, a leap into the unknown, but the alternative – another week of instant ramen and worn-out shoes – was far more terrifying. He tapped the confirmation button, his heart thudding against his ribs like a trapped bird.

For a moment, nothing happened. The screen remained stubbornly unchanged, the fifty dollars still a distant, almost mythical sum. Jonas slumped back against the peeling wallpaper, a bitter laugh escaping his lips. Of course. It was too good to be true. Just another cruel trick in a life already overflowing with them.

Then, a soft chime echoed from his phone. A notification popped up, a tiny banner at the top of the screen. His eyes widened, scanning the words. Transaction Complete. $50.00 Credited to Your Account.

He fumbled for his actual bank app, his hands slick with sweat. He logged in, his breath catching in his throat. There it was, nestled amongst the meager balance he’d been nursing for weeks: an additional fifty dollars. It was real. It was actually, undeniably real.

A wave of relief, so potent it made his knees weak, washed over him. The knot of anxiety that had been a permanent fixture in his chest began to loosen, unfurling like a fragile ribbon. He stared at the number, then back at the mysterious app, a disbelieving smile spreading across his face. It wasn’t a trick. It was a miracle.

Over the next few days, Jonas cautiously explored his newfound fortune. He started small, withdrawing seventy-five dollars, then a hundred. Each time, the money appeared in his account with the same effortless speed, the same reassuring chime. He bought himself a decent meal, the kind with actual protein and vegetables, and the taste was like pure bliss. He even managed to replace his threadbare coat with a warm, waterproof one, feeling a surge of pride as he walked through the rain, no longer a shivering refugee from the elements.

The app, which he’d secretly nicknamed ‘The Golden Goose,’ became his constant companion. He’d check it obsessively, the allure of easy money a siren song he couldn’t resist. The initial fifty dollars had been a tentative step; now, he was wading in deeper. He withdrew two hundred, then three. The numbers in his bank account grew, a comforting buffer against the harsh realities of his new life. He started to feel… secure. For the first time since arriving in this unfamiliar country, Jonas felt a flicker of genuine optimism. He could afford to send a little extra money back to his mother in Lithuania, a thought that brought a warmth to his heart that even the new coat couldn't match.

One evening, after a particularly successful withdrawal of five hundred dollars, Jonas decided to treat himself to a small celebration. He bought a cheap bottle of wine and some pastries from a local bakery. As he sat by his window, watching the city lights twinkle through the rain-streaked glass, he felt a sense of contentment he hadn't experienced in years. He opened ‘The Golden Goose’ one last time for the night, just to admire the steadily growing balance.

But this time, something was different. A small red notification icon appeared next to his withdrawal history. Curious, Jonas tapped it. A message, stark and unsettling, appeared on the screen:

“Your generosity is noted. A small adjustment has been made to ensure continued… reciprocity.”

Jonas frowned. Reciprocity? What did that mean? He scrolled down, his eyes widening in disbelief. The balance shown in the app was no longer the sum of his withdrawals. It was significantly less, as if a portion of the money he’d taken had been… clawed back.

Panic began to set in. He quickly switched to his bank app, his fingers flying across the screen. He logged in, his heart leaping into his throat. The amount in his bank account was also lower than it should have been. Not by a lot, but enough to confirm that the app’s message wasn't a glitch.

He reread the cryptic message. “A small adjustment has been made to ensure continued… reciprocity.” It sounded like a threat, veiled in polite, corporate language. Who had made the adjustment? And what did they expect in return for this… ‘reciprocity’?

He tried to withdraw another amount, a modest seventy-five dollars, just to see what would happen. He tapped the confirmation button, his hands shaking. The app churned for a moment, then displayed a new message:

“Transaction pending. Awaiting further… authorization.”

Further authorization? What did that mean? Jonas felt a cold dread seep into his bones. The golden goose, it seemed, had sharp claws. The easy money, the instant gratification, the promised freedom – it was all starting to feel like a trap. The dream of financial security was rapidly morphing into a waking nightmare. He was no longer in control. He was entangled, caught in a web spun by unseen hands. The adventure had taken a sharp, terrifying turn, and Jonas knew, with a chilling certainty, that the game had just begun.
