The weight of the second journal felt heavier in Elias’s hands, not from physical mass, but from the sheer audacity of its contents. He sat by the window, the afternoon sun slanting across his worn armchair, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air like tiny, undecided prayers. His father’s neat, precise script, usually so full of scripture and sermons, had taken a sharp turn into the unknown. He’d read about secret meetings, hushed conversations in dimly lit rooms, and coded messages that spoke of something far grander, and perhaps far more perilous, than Elias had ever imagined.

The 'JESUS' ring lay beside him on the small oak table, a constant, gleaming reminder of the faith Elias had so carefully, so painstakingly, shed. It was a symbol of his father’s unwavering devotion, a devotion Elias now saw through a different lens. Was it the same devotion that led Arthur Thorne to these clandestine activities? Or was it a desperate attempt to reconcile two worlds that Elias was only just beginning to glimpse?

He traced the intricate pattern on the second ring. It was a knot, Elias now realized, a sailor's knot, impossibly tight and yet elegantly formed. He’d spent hours staring at it, turning it over and over, searching for a meaning that eluded him. Now, the journal offered a potential answer. “The Mariner’s Knot,” his father had scrawled, the ink slightly blurred as if written in haste. “A symbol of steadfastness, of connection across the vastness. My anchor in the storm.”
