The air in the executive suite of The Grand Nyathi felt heavy, thick with unspoken anxieties. It was a stark contrast to the usual hum of efficiency, the polished veneer that Tafadzwa so meticulously maintained. I could feel it, a prickle on my skin, like the prelude to a thunderstorm. Mrs. Sibanda, usually a bastion of calm, had a slight tremor in her hand as she poured tea, her eyes darting towards Tafadzwa’s closed door. He hadn't emerged since the emergency board meeting that had bled into the late afternoon.

I was in the outer reception area, ostensibly reviewing reports, but my ears were tuned to the hushed conversations of the administrative staff, the nervous pacing of junior managers. The word ‘Chideme’ kept surfacing, whispered like a curse. Mr. Chideme. The name alone conjured images of a sleek, predatory animal, circling his prey. He was Tafadzwa's main competitor, a man whose ambition was as boundless as his ruthlessness was legendary. He’d been quiet for a while, almost too quiet, and now, it seemed, the storm he’d been brewing was finally about to break.

My own anxieties were a tangled mess. I was still finding my feet at The Grand Nyathi, still battling the ingrained perception of myself as that impulsive girl from Edgars. Every critique, every raised eyebrow from Tafadzwa, felt like a fresh jab at that old wound. But lately, something had shifted. A grudging respect had begun to bloom, nurtured by late nights in the kitchen, by the unexpected camaraderie of the staff, and by the occasional, fleeting moments where Tafadzwa’s guard slipped, revealing a man burdened by more than just business.
