Tafadzwa’s guarded facade cracks. A moment of unexpected kindness, a flicker of the man beneath the tycoon, catches Joyce off guard, stirring something new.
The air in the executive lounge was thick with the scent of expensive coffee and the quiet hum of power. I’d been summoned, of course. Tafadzwa Nyathi didn’t do casual meetings. Every interaction, every request, felt like a calculated move on a chessboard he alone seemed to understand. I traced the rim of my untouched mug, the porcelain cool beneath my fingertips, and waited. The silence stretched, punctuated only by the distant clinking of cutlery from the restaurant below, a symphony of normalcy I felt increasingly detached from.
He finally entered, not with the usual storm of hurried footsteps, but with a measured stride that spoke of a rare moment of pause. His tie was loosened slightly, a subtle concession to the late hour, and the sharp lines of his suit seemed a fraction softer. He didn’t speak immediately, just stood by the large window, his silhouette framed against the glittering expanse of the city lights. There was something in his posture, a weariness that didn’t quite fit the image of the invincible hotel tycoon.
“You wanted to see me, Mr. Nyathi?” My voice, surprisingly steady, cut through the stillness.
