The clatter of pans was a symphony of controlled chaos, a relentless rhythm that ordinarily soothed me. Today, it felt like a drumbeat against my temples. I was elbow-deep in a mountain of heirloom tomatoes, their skins cool and taut against my fingers, tasked with prepping them for Chef’s signature Caprese salad. It was a simple, almost meditative job, a welcome reprieve from the spreadsheet nightmares of the marketing department. But my mind wasn’t on the precise slicing of each ruby orb. It was on the man who had just swept through the kitchen, his presence an unwelcome seismic shift in the usually predictable hum of activity.
Tafadzwa Nyathi. The name still tasted like ash and arrogance in my mouth, even after two years. Seeing him here, in the heart of his empire, felt like a betrayal of the very air I breathed. He’d strode in with his usual entourage of sycophants, his tailored suit a stark contrast to the pristine white of the chef’s coats and the gleaming stainless steel. He’d paused, his gaze – sharp and appraising – sweeping over the organized disarray, lingering for a fraction of a second too long on me. I’d felt it then, that familiar prickle of indignation, a phantom echo of the humiliation I’d endured at Edgars.
“Ms. Makara,” Chef Antoine’s voice boomed, pulling me out of my reverie. “Are those tomatoes ready for the guests? They are asking.”
