The air in the hotel suite was thick, a palpable haze of unspoken words and simmering emotions. Outside, the Harare skyline glittered, a city of ambition and dreams, much like the one I harbored within my own chest. But tonight, all my focus was on him. Tafadzwa. The man who had, with a few careless words and a look of pure disdain, etched himself into my memory two years ago. And now, here he was, a breath away, his presence an almost physical force in the hushed elegance of the room.

We were supposed to be discussing the new marketing strategy for the Mount Zion property, a critical project that could make or break my internship. Mrs. Sibanda had entrusted me with significant responsibility, a trust I clung to fiercely. But every time my eyes met Tafadzwa’s, the professional facade threatened to crumble. His gaze, usually sharp and assessing, held a different kind of intensity now, a flicker of something I couldn’t quite decipher. It was a dangerous game, this dance we were doing, a tightrope walk over an abyss of past resentments and present desires.

He leaned back against the plush velvet of the armchair, a glass of amber liquid swirling in his hand. The low light caught the sharp angles of his jaw, the subtle curve of his lips that held a hint of a smile, a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. It was a smile that dared me, challenged me.
