The hushed reverence of Mrs. Sibanda’s office always managed to settle my nerves, a feat few places could achieve these days. It was a sanctuary of polished mahogany and the subtle scent of lavender, a stark contrast to the polished chrome and hushed urgency that permeated the rest of the Grand Nyathi. Sunlight, filtered through the immaculately clean panes, cast dancing patterns on the Persian rug as I sat opposite her, clutching my lukewarm tea like a lifeline.
“You’re doing well, Joyce,” Mrs. Sibanda said, her voice a soothing balm. Her eyes, the colour of rich, dark soil, held a wisdom that seemed to stretch back through decades of hotel management. She had a way of observing, of seeing beyond the polished veneer, that both reassured and unnerved me. “Your initiative in the marketing proposal was… notable.”
Notable. A single word, yet it carried the weight of her approval, a rare commodity. I’d poured every ounce of my being into that proposal, the one Tafadzwa had initially dismissed with a flick of his wrist. To have Mrs. Sibanda acknowledge its merit felt like a small victory, a chip taken out of the formidable wall of his disdain.
