The air in Tafadzwa’s office crackled, not with the usual hum of controlled power, but with a tension so thick I could almost taste it. It was the aftermath of the crisis, the exhilarating, terrifying aftermath that left you breathless and trembling, unsure of where the ground truly lay. We had navigated the treacherous waters of the IT systems collapse, a digital storm that had threatened to drown his meticulously built empire. And we had, somehow, emerged on the other side, battered but not broken.
Now, silence. A heavy, laden silence that pressed in on me from all sides. Tafadzwa sat behind his imposing mahogany desk, his gaze fixed on the city lights twinkling beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows. He hadn’t spoken since we’d confirmation that the last of the corrupted data had been restored, since Mrs. Sibanda had finally allowed herself a sigh of relief, her usual composure a fraction frayed.
I shifted my weight, the polished marble floor cool beneath my sensible heels. My heart hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs, a drumbeat of unease and something else, something far more dangerous. It was the echo of his touch, the memory of his hand steadying me when the servers had first gone dark, the unexpected warmth of his voice when he’d issued a rare word of praise for my quick thinking. He’d seen me, truly seen me, not as the clumsy student who’d bumped into him two years ago, but as someone capable, someone who could hold her own under pressure. And I, in turn, had seen him. Not as the arrogant, heartless tycoon, but as a man burdened by immense responsibility, a man who, in the face of disaster, had shown a flicker of something akin to… humanity.
