The sterile scent of disinfectant, usually a comforting sign of order, now felt suffocating, a testament to the chaos that had erupted within the pristine walls of The Grand Zenith. Outside, the Gweru sun blazed relentlessly, but inside, a different kind of heat was building, a simmering inferno that threatened to consume everything in its path. It had been days since the incident, days of frantic calls, hushed meetings, and the gnawing fear that everything Tafadzwa had painstakingly built was about to crumble. And through it all, there was Joyce.
She was everywhere, a whirlwind of focused energy, her presence a stark contrast to the usual hushed deference of the staff. She moved with a purpose that belied her youth, her eyes, sharp and intelligent, missing nothing. I’d watched her, initially with a detached amusement that quickly morphed into a grudging respect. She’d stumbled into this mess, a mere intern, yet she navigated the crisis with a resilience I hadn’t anticipated. She was no longer the feisty student who had demanded an apology in Edgars; she was a force, her determination a beacon in the encroaching darkness.
“Mr. Nyathi,” Mrs. Sibanda’s voice, usually a soothing balm, was tinged with urgency as she entered my private office. She held a tablet, her brow furrowed. “The latest reports from the Harare branch are… concerning. Mr. Chideme’s influence is spreading.”
