The air in the executive suite was thick, a suffocating blanket woven from fear and the acrid scent of impending disaster. Outside, the storm raged, a tempest mirroring the one brewing within the gilded walls of the Nyathi Grand. Rain lashed against the floor-to-ceiling windows, blurring the glittering cityscape into a watery impressionist painting. Inside, the silence was deafening, punctuated only by the frantic tapping of keyboards and the low, urgent murmur of hushed conversations.
My stomach churned, a knot of anxiety tightening with every passing minute. The system was down. Not just a glitch, but a full-blown, catastrophic shutdown. All reservations, all guest information, all financial records – gone. Vanished into the digital ether. And it was happening during peak season, the hotel teeming with guests, a delicate ecosystem teetering on the brink of collapse.
Tafadzwa, usually a picture of unflappable control, was pacing the length of the room, his tailored suit somehow looking rumpled despite the lack of any discernible movement from him that might cause such a state. His jaw was tight, a muscle twitching relentlessly. His eyes, usually sharp and assessing, darted around the room, restless, searching for an answer that wasn't there. He ran a hand through his perfectly styled hair, a gesture of frustration so alien it felt like a betrayal of the image he so meticulously cultivated.
