The wind, a cold, sharp whisper, had stripped the last of the leaves from the ancient oaks, leaving them skeletal against a sky the color of bruised plums. Snow lay in drifts, a thick, white blanket muffling the usual symphony of the forest. For most of the pack, the silence was a gnawing worry. The scent of prey was scarce, the familiar trails choked with ice. Pups whimpered with hunger, their small bodies huddled close to their mothers for warmth, for comfort.

Luna shivered, not just from the biting cold, but from a deeper unease that settled in her belly. She watched Elder Rowan, his fur frosted with age, his eyes wise and kind, trying to reassure the anxious wolves. His voice, usually a steady rumble, held a tremor of concern. "Patience, my kin," he’d murmured, his gaze sweeping over the worried faces. "The forest always provides. We must trust."

But trust felt like a fragile thing when her own belly ached with emptiness. She’d tried hunting, her paws sinking into the snow, her breath misting in the frigid air. The deer, their coats thick and their movements wary, were too quick, too far ahead. The rabbits, usually a reliable source of sustenance, were hidden deep in their burrows, their scent lost beneath the overwhelming musk of pine and frozen earth.
