Chapter 15
Winter's Last Breath
The harsh winter finally begins to recede. The pack, though weary, is alive and stronger for the ordeal. Luna feels a profound sense of peace and belonging.
The air, once sharp and biting, now carried a softer, gentler breath. The snow, which had piled in drifts so high they had threatened to swallow the den, was beginning to shrink, weeping streams that trickled and sang their way through the thawing earth. Winter's reign, long and unforgiving, was finally loosening its icy grip. The pack, weary and thinner than they had been when the first flakes fell, stirred with a quiet relief. They had endured.
Luna, curled at the edge of the den, felt it too. A lightness in her chest, a warmth that spread through her limbs, chasing away the lingering chill. The gnawing hunger that had been a constant companion for weeks had finally subsided, replaced by a deep, quiet contentment. She stretched, her muscles protesting slightly, and then padded out into the pale sunlight.
The forest floor, still patchy with snow, was dotted with the first brave shoots of green, tiny bursts of life pushing through the frozen ground. A robin, its chest a splash of vibrant red, chirped from a bare branch, a song of spring that was sweeter than any melody Luna had ever heard. She lifted her head, inhaling the scent of damp earth, of new growth, of life returning. It was a scent that filled her with an almost overwhelming sense of peace.
