The wind howled a mournful song outside the den, a stark contrast to the quiet warmth within. Luna lay curled beside Elder Rowan, her small body still trembling from the day's anxieties. The scent of pine and damp earth filled the air, a comforting aroma that usually soothed her, but today it was laced with the sharp tang of fear. She pressed closer to Rowan, his steady breathing a reassuring rhythm against her fur.

Rowan, his muzzle dusted with the silver of age, shifted slightly. His deep, rumbling voice, like stones tumbling in a riverbed, broke the silence. "The wind speaks of hardship, little one," he murmured, his golden eyes, ancient and kind, fixed on the flickering shadows dancing on the den walls. "But it also speaks of resilience. It bends, but it does not break."

Luna nuzzled his shoulder. "The snow… it's so deep, Rowan. The elders say the hunting is almost impossible. What if we don't find enough?" Her voice was a small, reedy sound, barely audible above the wind's lament. The image of her packmates, their ribs showing, their eyes hollow with hunger, haunted her.
