The air in Dr. Thorne’s study was thick with the scent of aged paper and something else, something faintly metallic, like ozone after a storm. Elara sat across from him, the unmarked book resting on the polished mahogany table between them, its stark cover a silent challenge. Dr. Thorne’s eyes, the colour of a winter sky, were fixed on the volume, a flicker of something akin to pain crossing his face before he smoothed it away.

“You’ve seen the numbers, the symbols,” he began, his voice a low rumble, like stones shifting in a riverbed. “You’ve felt the pull, the suggestion of an order beyond the obvious.” He gestured towards the book. “This is not merely a collection of puzzles, Elara. It is a key. And the lock it opens is the very architecture of your perception.”

Elara leaned forward, her librarian’s instinct for order warring with the unsettling intuition that this man spoke a language far older than any she’d catalogued. “The Oxygen Paradox,” she murmured, tasting the words. “You mentioned it before.”
