The air in Elara’s small apartment had grown heavy, thick with an unspoken tension that mirrored the encroaching shadows outside her windows. The book, usually a source of quiet fascination, now felt like a coiled serpent on her desk, its cryptic symbols seeming to writhe in the dim lamplight. The organization, once a distant threat, was now a palpable presence, their maneuvers becoming less subtle, more insistent. She felt their gaze like a prickling sensation on her skin, a constant reminder that she was no longer merely a curious librarian but a quarry.
A sharp rap on her door, louder than any polite knock, jolted her. Her heart leaped into her throat. It wasn’t Dr. Thorne; his visits were announced by a tentative clearing of his throat or a soft tap, almost apologetic. This was a demand. She peered through the peephole, her breath catching. Two men, dressed in nondescript dark suits, stood on her landing, their faces impassive, their eyes scanning the hallway with an unnerving efficiency. They looked like figures plucked from a spy novel, too polished, too deliberate.
“Ms. Elara Vance?” one of them called, his voice smooth but devoid of warmth.
