The air in the old library was thick with the scent of aging paper and forgotten stories, a familiar comfort that usually settled my nerves. But tonight, the usual hush felt charged, expectant. It had been weeks since the Miller family’s tearful relief, weeks since I’d felt the tangible warmth of a spirit finding its way home. And in those weeks, the whispers had grown louder, the fleeting glimpses more persistent. It was as if the veil, once a mere shimmer, had thinned considerably, allowing more than just the echoes of the departed to filter through.
I was tracing the spine of a particularly dusty tome, ostensibly searching for a forgotten passage on ancient folklore, but really, I was listening. Listening to the quiet hum of the universe that most people tuned out. And tonight, beneath the usual creaks and groans of the old building, there was a new sound. A faint, confused murmur, like a child lost in a fog.
It was coming from the far corner, near the section on cartography, a place I rarely frequented. Driven by an instinct I was still learning to trust, I moved towards it, my footsteps soft on the worn carpet. The murmur grew, coalescing into a voice, a soft, reedy sound, laced with bewilderment.
