The air in Eleanor Vance’s study was thick with the scent of aged paper and dried lavender, a familiar comfort that did little to soothe the tempest brewing within me. Eleanor’s fingers, delicate as moth wings, traced the faded inscription on the parchment before her. Beside it lay the locket, its silver surface now dull with the weight of the secrets it held. I watched her, my breath catching in my throat, waiting for the words that would finally illuminate the shadowed corners of my past.
“The Blackwood fortune,” Eleanor finally murmured, her voice a low hum, “was built on more than just shrewd investments and land acquisitions, Isabelle. It was built on… sacrifices.” She looked up, her eyes, the colour of a storm-tossed sea, locking onto mine. “Your parents, bless their souls, were caught in a web far larger and more treacherous than they ever imagined.”
She explained, her words painting a grim tapestry of ambition and betrayal. The fortune, a vast sum amassed over generations, was indeed immense, enough to live a life of unimaginable luxury. But its origins were steeped in a darkness that had clung to the Blackwood name like a shroud. There were whispers of unfair dealings, of rivalries that turned deadly, and of a pact, made in desperation, that bound the family to a dangerous obligation.
