Seraphina Blackwood sat in her usual high-backed chair, a portrait of regal stillness, her dark eyes, like chips of obsidian, fixed on Elara. The afternoon sun, which had earlier seemed so welcoming as it streamed through the tall windows, now cast long, distorted shadows that danced with an unsettling rhythm across the Persian rug. Elara’s heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage. She had come seeking answers, a balm for the gnawing emptiness of her past, but the silence that stretched between them was more deafening than any accusation.
“You wished to speak with me, Elara?” Seraphina’s voice was a silken whip, deceptively gentle, yet laced with an authority that brooked no argument. She gestured to the velvet seat opposite her, a silent invitation that felt more like a summons.
Elara took a deep breath, clutching the worn locket hidden beneath her dress. It felt warm against her skin, a small anchor in the rising tide of her fear. “Yes, Mrs. Blackwood. I… I have been experiencing some disturbing dreams. And I found some old documents in the library that seemed to speak of a connection… a connection to my parents.” Her voice trembled slightly, betraying the composure she so desperately tried to maintain.
