The air in Marcus Thorne’s cramped apartment hummed with the low thrum of ancient cooling fans struggling against the digital heat radiating from his array of monitors. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the perpetual gloom, illuminating stacks of yellowed financial reports and teetering towers of obsolete hardware. Anya felt a strange sense of déjà vu, a phantom echo of her own meticulously organized, now-shattered, workspace. Silas, ever the silent shadow, stood near the door, his gaze sweeping over the cluttered room with an almost imperceptible flicker of assessment.

Marcus, a man whose face seemed carved from weathered oak, sat hunched over a keyboard, his fingers, thick and calloused, dancing across the keys with surprising dexterity. He wore a faded, grease-stained t-shirt that hinted at a life lived far from the sterile glow of screens, a life of tangible grease and oil, perhaps. His eyes, sunken and sharp, barely acknowledged their arrival, fixed on the cascading lines of code on his primary display.

“You’re late,” Marcus grunted, his voice a gravelly rasp, as if he hadn’t spoken in days. He didn’t turn. “The Oracle doesn’t wait for dawdlers. Neither do the vultures it’s feeding.”
