Chapter 5
Chapter 5: The Second Trial
Elara, Kael, and Sera face the cracked jar of corruption. Sera reveals the oracle is her mother and that the corruption was a failed experiment by an ancient elder. They perform a purification ritual using nightshade and Kael's blood, but the vapor coalesces into a shadowy figure that speaks, revealing the final secret: the plague is not a disease but a trapped consciousness seeking release.
The dawn air hung thick with ash and silence. In the village square, the gathered people of Thornhaven stood motionless, their faces smudged with soot and grief. The chapel was a smoking ruin behind them, and before them stood Elara, the jar clutched to her chest, a thin dark thread of vapor curling from its cracked clay.
Elder Brom took a step back. “What do we do with that?”
Elara didn’t answer. She looked at Sera, who still held the book open to the margin note. “The second trial begins,” Elara read aloud. “When the jar cracks.”
