Chapter 4
Chapter 4: The Ash and the Answer
Elara, Kael, and Sera descend into the burning village. Elara takes command, organizing villagers to fight the fire while Kael helps rescue trapped families. Sera reveals the chapel's crypt holds the corruption's source. Elara convinces the hesitant elders to let the chapel burn entirely. During the fire, a section of the floor collapses, revealing a hidden chamber. Elara ventures in and finds an ancient skeleton clutching a jar of corrupted earth. She retrieves it, and the chapel timbers crash down around her. Kael pulls her out just in time. The fire ends, and the village gathers as Elara presents the evidence, finally proving her story.
Elara stepped forward, her feet carrying her down the slope toward the burning chapel before her mind had fully caught up. The nightshade root in her sleeve pressed against her wrist like a living thing, a reminder of every question she had asked and every accusation she had hurled. Behind her, Sera's whisper still hung in the air, soft and certain: "When the fire dies, the truth will rise from the ash."
Kael caught up to her in three long strides, his hand closing around her elbow. "Elara, wait. You can't just run into that."
She pulled free, not breaking stride. "The whole village is running, Kael. Someone has to lead."
