Anya’s fingers danced across the holographic keyboard, the cool blue light reflecting in her determined eyes. The precinct’s back room, usually a quiet haven of paperwork and lukewarm coffee, was now a hive of hushed urgency. Maps of the neighborhood, crisscrossed with red markers indicating Syndicate activity, were plastered across the walls. She’d spent days poring over the scant evidence, piecing together fragments of information that seemed to lead nowhere, or everywhere, all at once. The Syndicate’s movements were too precise, too strategic, to be mere random acts of vandalism. There was a purpose behind their terror, a hidden agenda that gnawed at her.
“Anything, Captain?” Sergeant Miller, a burly man with a perpetually worried frown, asked, his voice barely a whisper.
Anya sighed, leaning back in her chair, the springs groaning in protest. “It’s like trying to catch smoke, Miller. They’re here one minute, gone the next. And the patterns… they don’t make sense. They hit the old library, then the community garden, then the abandoned textile mill. What connects them?”
