The air shimmered, not with heat, but with an unsettling, almost oily distortion. It was as if the world had taken a deep breath and was struggling to exhale properly. Silas, his face a roadmap of ancient worries, gestured for me to follow. “Gate Five,” he murmured, his voice raspy, “is not a place you walk through. It is a place you *become*.”

Becoming was an understatement. The moment we stepped past an invisible threshold, the familiar cobblestone street dissolved. It wasn't a gradual fade, but a violent snap, like a photograph being ripped apart. Suddenly, I stood on a path paved with fractured mirrors, each shard reflecting a different version of myself, a different Elara. One Elara was a queen, regal and stern. Another was a beggar, huddled and weeping. A third was a warrior, eyes blazing with a fury I’d never known.

“Stay with me, Elara,” Silas’s voice was a lifeline, a steady anchor in the churning sea of possibility. He was a solid presence beside me, his cloak a patch of comforting darkness against the dazzling, disorienting reflections. “The Weaver’s influence is strong here. It delights in showing you what you *could* be, or what you *fear* you might have been.”
