The second Gate pulsed with sound. Its guardian was a symphony of discord. To pass, I had to find harmony within chaos. The Gate granted me a fragment of forgotten lore.

The air thrummed. Not with the usual hum of the city, the distant murmur of traffic, or the chatter of passing feet, but with a deeper, more resonant vibration that seemed to originate from within my own bones. It was like standing too close to a colossal bell that had just been struck, the echo reverberating through the very marrow of my existence. I’d felt it before, a faint tremor, a whisper of unease that had led me from my ordinary life to this extraordinary, terrifying path. But this was different. This was a roar.

“It’s Gate Two,” Silas said, his voice barely a breath against the sonic tide. He stood beside me, his usual stoic mask cracked by a flicker of something akin to awe, or perhaps dread. His eyes, usually so steady, darted around as if searching for the source of the sound, though we both knew it was all around us, within us. “It’s… agitated.”

Agitated was an understatement. The world around us seemed to ripple, not with the visual distortions I’d grown accustomed to – the flickering lampposts, the momentarily misplaced pigeons – but with an auditory distortion. A melody, impossibly complex and jarring, assaulted my ears. It was a thousand instruments playing at once, each in a different key, a different tempo, a cacophony that threatened to shatter my thoughts. Yet, beneath the chaos, a pattern, however fractured, began to emerge.
