Silas’s confession hung in the air like the scent of ozone after a lightning strike, heavy and charged. He’d spoken of his youth, a time before the weight of years settled on his shoulders, a time when he, too, had been a guardian. Not of a single Gate, but of the balance itself. He’d been so sure, so arrogant even, that he knew what was best. He’d seen a flicker, a potential in someone – someone he refused to name, but whose ambition he’d recognized too late – and had, in his misguided belief, opened a door. A way to mend what I perceived as flaws in the Gates, in their rigid control. I was a fool, Elara. Blinded by my own perceived wisdom.”

His words had been a torrent, a dam breaking after years of silent pressure. He’d spoken of the Weaver’s initial whispers, how they’d preyed on dissatisfaction, on the desire for change, on the very human yearning for a world without consequence. And Silas, in his hubris, had listened. He’d given the Weaver… a nudge. A single, catastrophic nudge.
