Temide’s heart thumped a frantic rhythm against his ribs as he sat across from Eliza in a small, steamy cafe. The air was thick with the scent of roasted coffee beans and the murmur of hushed conversations, a stark contrast to the sterile, humming silence of the server rooms he usually inhabited. He’d found her through a series of discreet inquiries, whispers passed along the digital grapevine from a source he barely trusted, a former colleague who’d once mentioned a ‘digital ghost’ capable of navigating the deepest corners of the internet. Eliza was that ghost, or so he hoped.
She was younger than he’d expected, with bright, intelligent eyes that seemed to miss nothing and a cascade of dark curls that framed a face etched with concentration. Her fingers, long and nimble, traced patterns on the condensation of her iced tea glass, a nervous energy radiating from her. Temide felt a surge of apprehension. He was a man of wires and circuits, of tangible problems that could be fixed with a wrench or a carefully soldered connection. Eliza, he suspected, dealt in a far more abstract and dangerous realm.
“So,” Eliza began, her voice a low, steady hum, “you’ve found something… unusual.” She didn’t ask it as a question, but as a statement of fact, her gaze piercing.
