The air in the Serpent’s Eye outpost was thick with a cloying, metallic scent, the kind that clung to the back of Elara’s throat and made her teeth ache. “Stay close,” Lyra murmured, her voice barely a breath against the rustle of Elara’s cloak. Her hand, surprisingly strong, rested on Elara’s arm, a silent anchor in the encroaching darkness. “They are meticulous. Their security is woven into the very stone.”

Elara nodded, her gaze sweeping over the rough-hewn walls. Each alcove, each shadowed corner, seemed to pulse with a hidden threat.
