The forest floor, a tapestry of decaying leaves and damp earth, offered little comfort to Elara’s fleeing feet. Each snapped twig, each rustle of unseen creatures, sent a fresh wave of adrenaline through her veins, tightening the knot of fear in her stomach. It had been days since she’d left the only home she’d ever known, days since the chilling whisper of the Serpent’s Eye had shattered her quiet existence. Now, the world was a labyrinth of shadows and uncertainty, and she was the quarry.
A sudden, sharp crack echoed through the trees, too deliberate to be the wind, too close to be ignored. Elara froze, her breath catching in her throat. She strained her ears, the silence that followed more unnerving than the sound itself. It was the silence of a predator assessing its prey, of a hunter who knew their mark was near.
Then, a voice, low and gravelly, cut through the stillness. "She went this way."
