Chapter 16
The Serpent's Trap
The Serpent's Eye lays a devastating trap for Elara and her allies. They are cornered, their options dwindling, leading to an inevitable confrontation.
The air in the hidden alcove thrummed with a tension so thick it felt like a physical weight pressing down on Elara’s chest. Moonlight, fractured by the dense canopy overhead, dappled the rough-hewn stone walls, casting long, dancing shadows that seemed to mimic the gnawing unease within her. Beside her, Lyra’s breath was a shallow whisper, her hand, usually steady, trembling ever so slightly against the worn leather of her satchel. Kaelen stood a few paces away, his silhouette a dark, unreadable line against the fainter gloom, his gaze fixed on the narrow entrance to their temporary sanctuary.
“They know,” Lyra murmured, her voice barely disturbing the oppressive silence. “They’ve found us.”
Elara’s heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic bird trapped within a cage. She’d felt it for hours, a prickling awareness at the edge of her senses, a cold dread that had steadily coiled tighter. It was the Serpent’s Eye, she knew it. They were relentless, their reach extending further than Elara had ever imagined possible. She’d thought their secluded escape, their careful weaving through the shadowed paths of the Whisperwood, had bought them time. Time to understand the strange, volatile power that pulsed beneath her skin, time to decipher the cryptic warnings Lyra had offered, time to perhaps, just perhaps, find a way to outrun the inevitable. But the inevitable, it seemed, had found them first.
