Chapter 14
A Desperate Alliance
Circumstances force Elara and Kaelen into a fragile alliance. They must put aside their differences to face a common enemy, though distrust lingers between them.
The damp chill of the cavern seeped into Elara’s bones, a stark contrast to the feverish heat that had consumed her just hours before. Her breath plumed in the frigid air, a testament to the raw, untamed power that had surged through her. Beside her, Kaelen remained a silhouette of coiled tension, his gaze fixed on the narrow opening they had just squeezed through. The guttural roar of the pursuing creatures still echoed faintly in the distance, a chilling reminder of how close they had come to being overwhelmed.

Elara hugged herself, the rough fabric of her tunic doing little to ward off the pervasive cold. “They were… faster than I expected.” She still felt the phantom ache in her limbs, the dizzying disorientation that had accompanied the violent eruption of her lineage’s power. It had been a desperate act, a raw, instinctive defense against the shadowy beasts that had cornered them. The earth had bucked beneath her feet, shards of obsidian had erupted from the very stone, forming a temporary, jagged barrier that had bought them precious moments to escape. It was a power she barely understood, a wild, destructive force that both terrified and fascinated her.
