The air in the desolate tavern was thick with the smell of stale ale and desperation. Rain lashed against the grimy windowpanes, each drop a tiny fist beating against the fragile barrier between Elara and the tempest outside. She nursed a lukewarm mug of something that tasted vaguely of earth and regret, her gaze fixed on the flickering candle on their table, its flame a nervous dancer in the gloom. Across from her, Lyra’s face was a mask of placid contemplation, her fingers tracing the worn runes on a small, leather-bound book. They had found refuge here, a temporary respite from the relentless pursuit, but the silence between them was fraught with unspoken anxieties.
“He’s close,” Lyra murmured, her voice barely disturbing the quiet. It wasn’t a question, but a statement of fact, delivered with the unnerving certainty that had become Elara’s only constant.
Elara’s hand tightened around the mug. “How do you know?”
