The air in the subterranean laboratory was thick with the cloying scent of decay and something else, something metallic and sharp, like ozone after a lightning strike. It clung to the rough-hewn rock walls, seeped into the very marrow of the bones that littered the workspace, and pulsed with the erratic rhythm of the flickering gas lamps.
