The air in Master Borin’s study always held a particular scent – a comforting blend of aged parchment, dried herbs, and the faint, metallic tang of ink. It was a scent Elara associated with quiet contemplation, with the patient unfolding of knowledge. Today, however, a subtle unease hung in the air, thick as the dust motes dancing in the shafts of afternoon sun. She sat opposite Master Borin, the fragment of the Enigma resting on the polished oak table between them, its stark grid a silent, insistent presence.
Master Borin’s weathered hands, usually so steady when turning the pages of ancient tomes, were clasped tightly before him. His brow, a landscape of fine wrinkles, was furrowed with a gravity Elara hadn't seen before. He had always been her guide, the steady lighthouse in the vast ocean of numerical lore, but now, his usual warmth seemed tempered by a shadow of apprehension.
“Elara,” he began, his voice a low rumble, “this… this fragment you found. It is not a mere curiosity.”
