The air in Silas Vance’s study was thick with the scent of polished wood and the faint, metallic tang of newly manufactured clockwork. Sunlight, filtered through the intricate latticework of his window, cast sharp, geometric shadows across the polished obsidian desk. Silas himself was a study in sharp lines and controlled energy, his tailored tunic a deep, authoritative blue, his gaze as precise as the instruments laid out before him. He tapped a long, slender finger against a thin, vellum scroll, his brow furrowed in concentration. The scroll was a detailed schematic, not of gears and springs, but of something far older, far more elusive: a grid.

“She’s too close,” he murmured, the words a low rumble that seemed to vibrate with impatience. His voice, usually smooth and persuasive, held an edge of something akin to hunger. “Borin’s pronouncements about ‘sacred traditions’ are a smokescreen. He knows what this is. They all know.” He gestured with a sweep of his hand, a gesture that encompassed the gleaming city visible through his window, a testament to the very progress he championed, and the ancient, shadowed corners where Elara was undoubtedly working.

His gaze drifted to a small, intricate device on his desk – a miniature automaton, its brass limbs poised as if ready to spring into action. He’d acquired it from a disgraced artisan, a man whose ambition had outstripped his skill. Now, this automaton was his eyes and ears in places he couldn't be. “Report,” he commanded, his voice barely a whisper.
