The air in the command center hung thick with the metallic tang of recycled oxygen and the unspoken tension that had become the resistance's constant companion. Commander Eva Rostova stood by the tactical display, her gaze fixed on the flickering schematics of occupied sectors, her shoulders slumped with a weariness that went deeper than mere physical exhaustion. Beside her, Fabian, a boy barely old enough to shave, radiated an unsettling calm, his eyes sharp and calculating as he absorbed the torrent of data flooding the screens.

"The orbital bombardment was successful," Fabian stated, his voice a low murmur that nonetheless cut through the ambient hum of the war room. "Minimal civilian casualties. The Hegemony garrison is crippled."

Rostova’s jaw tightened. "Minimal, Fabian? We lost Sector Gamma. Entire families… gone." Her voice cracked, the idealism she had clung to for so long fraying at the edges. She had seen the reports, the raw, unedited feeds of the destruction. Fabian’s ‘minimal casualties’ were still individuals, still lives extinguished for the sake of a strategic advantage.
