The metallic tang of recycled air did little to mask the coppery scent of fear that permeated the command deck of the *Vengeance*, his flagship. It was a scent he had come to associate with victory.
Across the polished obsidian of the tactical display, the overlord fleet shimmered, a swarm of obsidian beetles against the cosmic backdrop. They were a terrifying testament to the sheer, unyielding cruelty of this galaxy. Fabian traced a line with his fingertip, a phantom scar on the holographic representation of the enemy formation. His strategy, honed through countless simulations and bloody skirmishes, was a brutal masterpiece. It relied on sacrifice, on the calculated expenditure of lives, to achieve its devastating ends.
“Commander,” a voice crackled through the comms, taut with suppressed anxiety. It was Jax, his second-in-command, a burly warrior whose idealism had long since been chipped away by the relentless war. “The forward scouts are reporting… anomalies. Xylar’s fleet is diverting course.”
