The chill of the command center seemed to seep into Fabian’s very bones, a stark contrast to the burning ambition that now fueled him. He stood before the holographic projection of the galaxy map, a swirling canvas of blues and reds, each pinprick of light representing lives, resources, and the ever-present threat of the Overlords. Commander Rostova had yielded the reins, her weary eyes holding a mixture of apprehension and a desperate flicker of hope that Fabian found both pathetic and useful. He had promised her victory, a word that now tasted like ash in his mouth, but he had also promised her survival. That was the currency he dealt in.
“They are consolidating their forces near the Cygnus Arm,” a technician, a young woman named Anya with haunted eyes, reported, her voice barely a whisper. “Scans indicate a fleet larger than anything we’ve encountered. Thirty thousand vessels, minimum.”
Fabian traced a line across the map with a gloved finger, his mind already dissecting the overwhelming odds. Thirty thousand. A number that would have sent him scrambling for cover mere weeks ago. Now, it was simply a problem to be solved. “And Xylar? What news from our… associates?”
