The acrid tang of scorched metal and something far more organic, something that twisted the gut, clung to the air. Fabian stood amidst the skeletal remains of what had been a vibrant settlement, the silence a deafening testament to the price of his ambition. The faces of the dead, or what remained of them, were etched into his mind, a gallery of silent accusers. He had seen the devastation, the wails of the survivors, the raw, unvarnished horror that followed in the wake of his calculated maneuver. It was a sight that should have crushed him, shattered the fragile edifice of his resolve. Instead, it solidified it.

He knelt, his fingers tracing the outline of a child’s doll, its porcelain face cracked, one painted eye staring blankly at the ash-choked sky. A wave of nausea threatened to overwhelm him, a visceral recoil from the suffering he had wrought. This was not the clean, strategic victory he had envisioned in the sterile confines of his old room, the triumphant glow of his monitor his only witness. This was brutal, messy, and it bled.

*This is the cost,* a voice whispered within him, cold and clear. *This is what it takes.*
