The hum of the salvaged power core vibrated through the recycled metal floor, a low thrum that had become the soundtrack to Fabian’s existence. He traced the condensation on the viewport, the swirling nebulae outside mocking him with their indifferent beauty. It had been weeks since Xylar’s faction, the Lumina, had offered their ‘assistance.’ Assistance, Fabian had learned, was a fluid concept with the Lumina, a word that shifted and warped depending on what benefit they stood to gain. And Xylar, their leader, was a master of such linguistic alchemy.

“They are not what they seem, you know,” Xylar’s voice, a silken ripple in the sterile air of the command center, startled Fabian. It always did. He hadn’t heard them enter, hadn't sensed their ethereal presence until the words were already spoken. The Lumina moved like ghosts, their forms shimmering with an inner light that made them both beautiful and unnerving. Xylar, in particular, possessed an androgynous grace that defied easy categorization, their eyes pools of liquid starlight that seemed to hold the wisdom of forgotten ages.

Fabian turned, leaning back against the console. “Who isn’t what they seem, Xylar? The Overlords? Commander Rostova? Me?” A ghost of a smile touched his lips. He was learning to play their game, to deflect and probe, to keep his own cards hidden.
