The crisp autumn air did little to cool the frantic beat of my heart. It was a familiar rhythm now, a soundtrack to my new reality, but that didn't make it any less terrifying. Every rustle of leaves, every distant siren, felt like a harbinger of them. And today, the harbinger had a face.
I’d been so focused on the intricate patterns of the board, on tracing the next potential move of the shadowy organization, that I’d almost missed her. Almost. A flicker of movement in my peripheral vision, a stillness that was too deliberate, too watchful. She was standing across the street from the small café where I’d dared to grab a coffee, blending in with the usual city bustle, yet utterly distinct. Her dark trench coat seemed to absorb the light, her posture rigid, her gaze fixed with unnerving intensity. Agent Sterling. I knew it instantly, though I’d never seen her before. Thorne’s enforcer. The one who’d been a ghost in the periphery of my life for weeks.
My blood ran cold. The Navigator’s Game lay tucked securely in my messenger bag, its wooden weight a comforting, yet terrifying, anchor. I’d been studying the chess pieces on the board, trying to decipher the subtle shifts in their positions that mirrored the recent, unsettlingly accurate, predictions I’d made about a local soccer match. Now, the game felt less like a tool and more like a target.
