Mrs. Sterling watched Lily from the doorway of the grand sitting room, a delicate teacup poised halfway to her lips. The afternoon sun, usually a warm embrace in this opulent space, felt strangely clinical, highlighting the dust motes dancing in the air and the faint, almost imperceptible flicker in her own eyes.
