The air in Mr. Sterling's study was thick with the scent of aged paper and polished wood, a perfume of quiet wealth that Lily found both comforting and a little suffocating. Sunlight, filtered through the heavy velvet curtains, cast long, lazy stripes across the Persian rug. It was a room designed for contemplation, for hushed conversations, and for the accumulation of knowledge. Towering bookshelves lined three of the walls, their spines a kaleidoscope of leather and gold leaf, promising worlds untold. Lily, left to her own devices while Mrs. Sterling attended to some unseen domestic crisis, wandered between them, her fingers tracing the embossed titles.

Her gaze drifted over the endless rows of books. Histories, biographies, art collections, novels whose titles whispered of adventure and intrigue. Lily, a reader at heart, felt a pang of longing for the freedom to explore them all. But her attention snagged on something small, something out of place. On the third shelf from the bottom, nestled between a formidable tome on Roman architecture and a slim volume of poetry, a single book sat slightly askew. It was bound in dark green leather, unremarkable save for its position.
