The afternoon sun, usually a cheerful splash of gold across the manicured lawns, felt muted today, as if even the light itself hesitated to linger too long in the Sterling estate. Lily, her heart still thrumming with the urgency of the riddle, slipped out the back door. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and the sweet, cloying perfume of roses that had long since gone to seed. The garden, unlike the rest of the house, was a riot of untamed growth, a stark contrast to the pristine order inside. It was here, amidst the tangled vines and towering weeds, that the riddle whispered its secrets.

A sentinel. Ages old. Lily’s gaze swept across the unruly expanse. Her eyes, sharp and observant, landed on the ancient oak tree at the far end of the garden, its gnarled branches reaching towards the sky like arthritic fingers. It stood apart, a silent guardian, its trunk thick and weathered, its roots sprawling like an old man’s veins across the earth. This had to be it.
