Midnight's Secret

Unable to shake the image of the yellow door, Lily tiptoes out of bed at midnight. She finds the door now firmly locked, her earlier attempt thwarted, deepening the mystery.

The moon, a sliver of bone against the inky sky, offered little comfort as Lily crept from her bed. The house, usually alive with the hushed rustle of servants and the distant murmur of her adoptive parents, was now a vast, silent beast. Each creak of the floorboards beneath her bare feet sounded like a thunderclap, and she held her breath, willing the old wood to be quiet. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage. The memory of the yellow door, so vibrant and out of place against the muted tones of the garden wall, pulsed behind her eyelids. It was a beacon, a question mark that refused to fade.

She reached the landing, the grand staircase a dark, looming shadow. Her bedroom was at the far end of the east wing, and the yellow door was nestled in the shadowed corner of the west wing, a place she hadn't ventured into before her afternoon exploration. Every step was deliberate, a careful placement of weight, a silent prayer that no one would stir. The air grew cooler as she moved away from the warmth of her room, carrying with it the faint, musty scent of disuse.

Finally, she stood at the threshold of the west wing corridor. The darkness here was more profound, swallowing the moonlight that dared to peek through the tall, arched windows. She navigated by touch, her fingers trailing along the cool, polished wood of the wainscoting. A faint shimmer of moonlight caught a sliver of light ahead, and she knew she was close. Then, there it was. The yellow door.
