Chapter 18
A Shared Secret
Lily learns the condition is hereditary. Her parents had hoped to protect her from it, but the journals reveal a potential cure, one that might also be linked to her own past.
The air in the study was thick with the scent of old paper and something else, something faintly metallic, like the ghost of a forgotten lock. Lily traced the faded script in the leather-bound journal, her fingers brushing against the brittle pages. Her parents’ words, scrawled in their own hands, spoke of a shared burden, a secret passed down through generations. It wasn't a curse, not in the way she’d first imagined, but a condition, a peculiar fading of the inner light that gave their eyes their depth. A hereditary trait, the journal called it, something that had begun to manifest in them years before she ever arrived, a slow dimming of their true selves.
She reread the passage about the “fading,” her throat tightening. Her parents, the Sterlings, had been so careful, so deliberate in their adoption of her. They’d wanted to shield her, to give her a life free from the encroaching shadow that had claimed them. But shielding her from what, exactly? The journal offered no easy answers, only fragmented whispers of hope and a desperate search for a remedy.
Then she found it, a section penned in her mother’s more elegant, yet still hurried, hand. “The cure,” it began, the ink a little bolder, as if Eleanor had poured all her remaining conviction into these words. “It is not a cure in the traditional sense, but a rekindling. A way to reconnect the spark, to bring back the clarity. And it is intrinsically linked to the child. To her memory. To her bloodline.”
