The air in the grand study felt thick, heavy with unspoken words and the lingering scent of old paper. Lily sat perched on the edge of the plush armchair, her small hands clasped tightly in her lap. Across the polished mahogany desk, Mrs. Sterling’s eyes, usually so unnervingly blank, held a flicker of something new – a raw, exposed vulnerability that made Lily’s own heart ache. Mr. Sterling stood beside his wife, his gaze fixed on a point somewhere beyond Lily’s head, his stillness a stark contrast to the tremor that ran through his wife’s voice.

"It's… it's a condition, Lily," Mrs. Sterling began, her voice barely a whisper. She gestured vaguely towards her own eyes, then to her husband’s. "A very rare one. It affects… how we see. How the world sees us."

Lily waited, her breath catching in her throat. She had seen the vacant stare, the way their eyes seemed to look through people rather than at them. It was a chilling emptiness that had always set her teeth on edge. But now, hearing her adoptive mother speak of it, a strange sadness bloomed in Lily’s chest.
