The weight of the small, cool metal in Lily’s palm felt like the answer to a question she hadn't quite dared to ask. The velvet pouch, nestled deep within the dusty folds of the old tapestry, had yielded its prize: a key, unmistakably yellow, just like the door. It wasn't ornate, not gilded or jeweled, but a simple, sturdy thing, its metal worn smooth in places, hinting at countless turns in unseen locks. Now, clutching it, Lily felt a tremor of something akin to fear, but it was dwarfed by a surging tide of resolve. The time for whispers and shadows was over. It was time for the truth.

They both wore that same peculiar look – a placid, almost glassy sheen to their eyes, as if a veil had been drawn over their inner selves, leaving only a placid surface.

Lily’s heart hammered against her ribs. She took a deep breath, the scent of old wood and lilies filling her lungs. “Mother? Father?” Her voice, usually a quiet murmur, felt unnervingly loud in the hushed room.
