The thick velvet curtains of the Sterling mansion did little to muffle the sounds that drifted from her parents' chambers. Lily, tucked away in her own room, a space that felt more like a gilded cage than a home, found herself straining her ears. It was late, the kind of late where the house seemed to hold its breath, and the silence was usually profound. But tonight, a low murmur, like the rustling of dry leaves, had seeped under her door.

Curiosity, that persistent companion, tugged at her. She crept out of bed, her bare feet silent on the Persian rug. The hallway was cast in the dim glow of a single, ornate lamp, its light pooling on the polished mahogany floor. The voices were coming from her parents' suite, the door slightly ajar, a sliver of amber light escaping into the darkness.

She tiptoed closer, her heart thumping a nervous rhythm against her ribs. She could make out the distinct tones of Mrs. Sterling, her voice a hushed, anxious whisper, and Mr. Sterling’s deeper, more resonant rumble, though his words were harder to decipher. Lily pressed herself against the cool plaster of the wall, trying to absorb every syllable.
